Mom: Honey, they shrunk the China! Cathy: You got Grandman's China out for Thanksgiving dinner this year, Mom! Mom: Isn't it pretty? Cathy: I'll help set the table. Where are the dinner plates? Mom: You're holding the dinner plate. Cathy: This is the dinner plate? There's no room for any food on here! I thought this was the salad plate! Mom: No...this is the salad plate! Cathy: That's a salad plate?! Mom: This is the size salads used to be! Everything's bigger now! Portions are bigger...Plates are bigger...Tables are bigger...and, needless to say, chairs are bigger.. Cathy: We can't have changed that much!...Here! Here's a normal plate! A normal-sized dinner plate! Mom: This is Grandma's turkey serving platter. Cathy: Aack!! Mom: There, there...Let me pour you ten or fifteen cups of coffee....
I had to laugh when I saw this strip because I have china with small cups I received as a wedding gift 48 years ago! I stopped using the set several years ago. Americans use big coffee mugs these days and the plates are definitely smaller. I’ve often wondered if it’s really a luncheon set, which maybe isn’t even sold here any longer.
