Cathy: Why am I the only one who ever sweeps the porch? Irving: I can sweep, honey. All you have to do is ask! Cathy: If I ask, it means porch sweeping is my job and you're helping. Porch sweeping isn't my job! Irving: Why don't you make a chart so we can take turns? Irving: Because chart making is another "girl" job. I'm not in charge of the typical "girl" jobs, remember? Irving: Yes. And I'm not in charge of the typical "boy" jobs. Cathy: Laundry isn't "my" job! Irving: Mowing isn't "my" job! Cathy: Dusting isn't "my" job! Irving: Car washing isn't "my" job! Cathy + Irving: And the jobs that used to be "your" jobs aren't "my" jobs! We're way more evolved than that! Cathy: Um, who's on dinner? Irving: Hah! Another successful delegation of powerlessness.
We have a fairly loose arrangement…he vacs, mows, does the heavy stuff….I start dinner, sometimes he finishes and cleans up. We shop together and each do our own laundry. I do the dusting, clean the kitchen, bathroom, and take care of plants inside and some outside. We both still work, so the house isn’t always perfect, but we try.
