I see you’re drinking coffee today, Mona. Recovered from our hangover, are we? No more surreal nightmares? Lovelife all in order? Not a trace of hypocrisy here, hmm?

Hello, she’s French. They invented hypocrisy (with a little help from the English).

Yes, she is French. So do you think that there could be a reason she would delight in the discomfort her neighbors are feeling the morning after Drinko De Mayo celebrations? It could have something to do with the Battle of Puebla and Mona was a History Major. Also the Sunday strips seem to be months ahead of the daily strips at the moment, so who knows (besides JB) whats going on in the background.

The Mexicans beat the French. Impressive. As have the English, the Haitians, the Russians, the Swedes, the Germans (well, with the Germans, beating the French is actually more of a tradition), the Austrians, the Iroquois . . .

Anybody want to buy a surplus French army rifle? Never fired and only dropped once!

An old joke but those are the best don’t you think?

If you know a bit about real history you’d know that a French army rifle would only go unfired due to the reality that a rifle is just that thing that goes on the back of a bayonet. As for that thing about Puebla, turn on NPR or even the BBC World Report, I heard about it probably 40 or 50 times over the last few days.

Do you know how many Frenchmen it takes to defend Paris? Yeah, nobody else does, either. It’s never been tried.

The old ones definitely are best.

And next time you feel like patting yourself on the back for saving those Frenchies’ bacon in WWI and WWII, don’t forget the help they gave us in 1776. (Of course, that has as much or more to do with their wanting to hurt the Brits as with a wish to help us.) If it wasn’t for French military aid, we’d all be speaking ENGLISH today!

Not entireoly true, mon ami: the seige of Paris in 1870 was never broken by the Prussians – only a wider French collapse precipitated surrender. And then there was the battle of the Marne in 1914 with the Germans only a few tens of miles away…. June 1940 was the abberation, but as it’s nearest in time it’s the one we all remember!

Ah, that’s what the 5th of May is about, then, a Mexican national celebration (evidently the foreign Legion wasn’t playing on the day – didn’t they distinguish themselves with an epic defence during the Mexican war that kind of rescued something for France? you learn something new every day – I was thinking about the Argie navy during the Falklands war that had a ship named after the something cinco de mayo…

(and we haven’t forgotten the most effective Argie weapon in that war was sold to them by the bloody French, either…)
