Yes, you have to nail it. But from the size of the strip you will never see a nail.

They did a mini series about the first modern olympics back in the 80’s that starred David Ogden Stiers (Charles Emerson Winchester the III from MASH). The American team had no idea what the modern discus or shotput was like so they had a blacksmith make a set for them based on out of proportion ancient Greek drawings. When the American athelete doing the discus and shotput walked in with his own equipment the officials told him he had to use the official equipment, he practically threw them out of the stadium because he was use to throwing the weight of his own equipment.
