Mom: Why so glum, Abby? Abby: Mom, why did they have to end the WUSA? Didn't they get enough fans? The stadium was full even when they played that exhibition match here. Remember that? It was cool! Mom: Ohh--the demise of the women's united soccer association. Sweetie, it's not that the games where's fun and exciting. The league just couldn't generate enough sponsor money to cover costs. It comes down to math. Abby: I hate math! Dad: Homework trouble?

No Hugo, I believe Abby’s crying over something much more serious than that.

The women wouldn´t cheat by faking injuries which is a required element of professional sport?

Pro team vs. pro team didn’t generate the excitement that nation vs. nation does every few years. That kept the viewership numbers down. No viewers, the ads are cheaper and the networks pay less to the league. Notice Abby didn’t say she watched them on T.V.? Then there are the chauvinists who won’t watch women’s sports.

The greatest reason soccer does not succeed commercially in America is the lack of commercials, which is the second reason I like soccer. The first reason is the nonstop play, which is why there are no commercial breaks.
