The Art of the Writing Process: Pearls Before Swine Gets Meta

In Pearls Before Swine creator Stephan Pastis' case, he is apparently a rat, a pig, a goat, a zebra, a ravenously hungry alligator and a cartoon version of himself.
This may explain the draw of this delightfully weird comic strip. Pastis toes the meta line time and time again, following his characters and himself through the arduous and self-loathing process that is writing, with a wink and nudge at the reader.
