If you insist on getting technical, the last sentence refers to a single bear. She says, “that bear”. Bear’s is singular possessive. Bears’ is plural possessive. Given one bear, not three, the grammar is correct.
Sorry, if that offends anyone. (well, not really sorry)
Sorry to all for the offensive grammar; however, MoParMitch IS correct on this one. So, while I stand incorrectly corrected, I believe I’ve been vindictively vindicated.
The singular possessive form is used to indicate she ate ALL of each of the bear’s porridge inspite of their being too hot or too cold, except the last one, which had some kind of mystery to it. We’ll never know, but little girls who sneak in to eat the porridge of bears should get their comeuppance anyway.
I hope that clears up any misunderstanding and makes the offense that much more offensive.
Thanks for reading this stoopid cartune.
Thom who cares if its gramatically correct or not? You don’t owe this crowd any* “splanation* what so ever! :-D But it’s nice you take time to talk to us!
I was an English major, too! My only sports in high school were cross country, swimming and water polo. Nerd sports. I guess that’s why the other guys always got the girls - but I could insult them so eloquently behind their backs!
Thom Thom lol being a Nerd is fun. then some how being a nerd in High school changes when you get to the university, its like you forget eveything you ever learned. its crazy
Actually, Mopar is WRONG!!! The “bear’s” near the top WAS plural possessive and SHOULD have been “bears’” as it is referring to ALL of the bears’ porridge. But hey, who cares! BTW, Mopar, what kind of jock were you that you got beat up a lot???
JFri, I was really just poking fun at the whole issue of grammar in a comic. I’m with you, who cares, but my point was that IF the reference was to a single bear, as implied by the last sentence, the correct usage would be bear’s. I’m done now. That’s too much already.
I had the distinction of being an honor student while still being “cool” (at least I thought so). I played football and basketball. The “beat up” was more a case of hearing a lot of bleeep from the other jocks and rebels about being a good student, which has as element of “nerd” to it.
The Nanny Bot works in mysterious ways, Mopar! It too knows this is an offensive minded strip site!
And Thom Thom, thank you for letting me know I’ve bin speeling stoopid rite all along! I feele mutch gooder now! I knew you me and Alice C all came from the samarter edjication sistem!

Just right the baby bear’s porridge was not.
(Neither is Goldie’s spelling of “bears’”, but then, even Thomas Jefferson spelled “its” as “it’s” from time to time.)

I think the toon is funny enough that it bears some grammatical allowances once in a while…

When looking at something humorous, I guess I don’t worry about grammatical errors?

Thom–just blame Goldilocks! She’s only a little kid, after all. And, as DocT said, Grammar was from Red Riding Hood, not Goldilocks…
(I know, a deliciously bad pun…)

I bet Goldi wasn’t pleased either with the so-called “just right” chair and bed of Baby Bear.

Short answer, not a very good jock.

I think she was referring to “bear’s porridge” in the same manner as “shepherd’s pie”, and the baby bear considerately added some Gold’s lox to his.
