Easter was a pagan goddess. December 25 has been celebrated by people in the northern hemisphere for at least, 2600 years, probably much longer. The Christians stole the holiday from the followers of the Persian sun god Mithras. The holiday as we know it began in Victorian times. George Washington, Ben Franklin and most of the other important people who founded the USA never celebrated it.
Jesus probably was both born and died sometime in the spring, around Passover. So true, the Catholic priests got the dates wrong, but we’re stuck with it. And we do it so much better than they did.
Actually, the founding fathers did celebrate Christmas. Just not so much Santa Claus. The English of the Puritan era before them fought to celebrate their traditional holiday, which the Puritans opposed on grounds it was too Catholic.
So relax and have fun with it. It’s a party, and we don’t need a pooper.
Merry Christmas!
