Man: You are on the historic Yucatan Peninsula. People ask, "Why is this called Yucatan?" Well, when the first Spanish explorers came, they called from their ships to the native fishermen who were Mayan - "what is the name of your country?" The natives shouted back, "Yucatan, Yucatan!" So, the Spanish captains wrote on their maps; "Yucatan". Which is an interesting name because in the Mayan language "Yucatan" means, "I don't understand what you're saying!"

Same bit was used in the film “The Arrival”. ….Dr. Louise Banks: In 1770, Captain James Cook’s ship ran aground off the coast of Australia and led a party, where they found the aboriginal people. One of the sailors pointed to the animals that hop around and put their babies in their pouch, And he asked what they were. The Aborigines said “kangaroo”. Dr. Louise Banks: It wasn’t until later that they learned that “kangaroo” means “I don’t understand”. Ian Donnelly: It’s a good story. Dr. Louise Banks: Thanks. It’s not true, but it proves my point…..

Regarding this and other similar tall-tales: In real life, wouldn’t they realize they don’t understand each other and move on?
