Ranchers around here keep bulls separated from cows, because they, the ranchers that is, want the cows bred only at a certain time of year. So the bulls aren’t in feedlots, but out on the range, which as Jazzlily (I think) pointed out, makes it difficult to collect manure.
My understanding is that calves are kept by the rancher until they are about 6 months old, when they’re moved to feedlots, except for the heifers who are replacing old cows.
