That’s gantlet.

Gauntlet is correct in this instance. But, you sent me to the dictionary to figure out what railroad had to do with anything – looked up gantlet. I learn so much reading the comics!

And then there’s the modern day usage and spelling. And since words can and DO change meaning (see “ironic” for fun/aggravation) “guantlet” is perfectly valid. .Interestingly enough I used to hear “run the gamut” an in try all of them, so hey, regional dielects/idioms for the win!
