From one of Terry Pratchett’s books, there is a scene where someone says “we put all our politicians in jail as soon as they are elected. We find it saves so much time.”
Ronald Rini: Because the New York Times won a case against Sullivan in which the Supreme Court said, in effect, unless you can produce an inner-office memo saying, “We know this is false, but let’s get him anyway”, you have no recourse if you “sought public notoriety” (e.g. ran for public office. My “reporter” course adjunct instructor (even lower on the academic ladder than a student assistant) claimed that writing a letter to the editor qualified as that seeking, so if you can document that, you can print anything.
