I don’t know that Bob is so bad at interviewing. According to an old tale (reprinted in a Readers’ Digest book on grammar, et al.), what many people consider Barbara Walters’ finest interview happened during her early days on the Today show. She introduced actress Mercedes McCambridge who, Walters said, was an ex-alcoholic. McCambridge immediately corrected her; then went on an extended monologue as to how there were no ex-alcoholics, just alcoholics who kept their problems under control through work and faith. McCambridge’s monologue was so extended that the next words out of Walters’ mouth, about seven minutes later, were, “Thank you, Miss McCambridge; we’ll be back in a moment.”
