Baldo by Hector D. Cantú and Carlos Castellanos for December 23, 2009
Transcript:
Gracie: Papi, what do you want for christmas? Dad: Oh, I don't know Gracie. Dad: I have a nice house... a comfy chair... beautiful children... Baldo: It's Tia Fela! And it looks like she's bringing her hot pepper and pork fruitcake! Dad: Maybe a cast-iron stomach. That'd be nice.

I think what he needs is a dog with a strong stomach… a really strong stomach.

I don’t know… With the right combination of fruits like tart apples and sweet pears, you could make that kind of fruitcake work. Oh, and pouring a whole bottle of tequila over it wouldn’t hurt either…

They better find those purple bunny slippers, too.

Peach brandy … peach brandy improves any fruitcake.

sounds like some tamales I have seen. In El salvador, they threw a whole chicken leg in one.
I want someone to do some home improvments to my house for the holidays.

John Reiher, Jr, you forgot the part about setting the whole thing on fire.

@Merrymarg You’re right of course. But to do a fruitcake right, you have to start two weeks before Christmas and keep the cake well moisten in brandy till you serve it!

actually it sounds pretty good to me and a spicy improvement on some of the plain fruitcakes i’ve been subjected to over the years. but that’s just me

An «estómago de hierro» it is then, Sergio (make it three, though: him, Baldo and Gracie; I’m sure Tía Carmen LOVES Tía Fela’s «pastel de fruta con chilis picantes y puerco»).

OK, y’all may think I’m a little weird, but I’d like to give it a try to see how it tastes. It’s certainly not as strange as some foods I’ve eaten over the years, and it actually sounds like it might be good.
