Nightmares will help you work out your inner conflictedness, my solemn-faced friend. And “black squirrel,” I should think, is less dangerous than “black cat” (pacejudyparka).
I have a theory about why black squirrels are black—-
they are really red squirrels– but they are wearing the uniform of the commando squirrels!–
yes , when citizen squirrels are shot at or chased by dogs and cats, the highly trained and motivated commando squirrel team is called in action to quickly extinguish the threat so that the normal, peace loving squirrels can go on with their contented, nut gathering lives…..bad luck? you betcha!
We’ve got all the various squirrel colors in Oregon too - however, it was a large, grey squirrel that I saw on my college campus years ago that I believe to be the unluckiest one of all.
I was walking home from class, when I happened to look across the street to the sidewalk on the other side. Walking there was a girl with a backpack and a(n apparrently shiny) barrette in her hair. As she was passing under a low-hanging tree, a grey squirrel pounced out of said tree onto her backpack and then climbed up to her head and appeared to be trying to TAKE the barrette from her hair. Aside from (or perhaps because of) the fact that the girl was freaking out, this was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. The squirrel gave up very quickly (~20 secs), but I still vividly remember the event after about 12 years!
The National Zoo (in Washington DC) imported some 18 of the black Canadian squirrels for their grounds in 1902 and 1906 (someone thought they were cool).
The black squirrels managed to escape the grounds and breed with local squirrels, so the local squirrel population in and around DC has changed - I live about 20 miles north of the zoo and about half the squirrels here are shiny black.
In The Two Towers, Faramir mentions having seen Gollum, and says that he thought it was “…one of those black squirrels from Mirkwood…” This is why I always took issue with artist’s depictions of Gollum as pale or white.

How far back did the path crossing occur?

My path has been crossed by so many animals I can’t tell them apart anymore.

I think I see a black squirrel in the background. So much unluckier than a black cat.

Squirrels are red in my area, grey in Missouri to the east, but I never heard of a black squirrel. Any theories about why the different colors???
Lefty2 about 15 years ago
And there are some white squirrels in Marionville. Missouri!

Black cats just bring you bad luck. Black squirrels give you an urge to dress funny. That can be devastating.

Today’s strip is a film poster just screaming for an independent production to be made around it.

In my neighborhood we have black, gray, and red squirrels. My dog is equally fascinated by all of them.
