Funny, our male Dachshund doesn’t care. He’ll water any spot that smells good to him and it’s usually bare ground. I’ve had larger male dogs and it didn’t matter to them either. Since female dogs squat, he would leave his mark where they left theirs.
I had a Siberian Husky/Malemute and had to remember not to stand behind him when he “watered” the tree, bush, whatever. When he was done he would kick with his hind legs like he was covering something and if I was too close I’d get covered with dirt, grass, weeds. I still miss him after 9 years.
