Poor Petey, just a bit too young to have read that classic novel.

Well, Peter Otterloop, Jr., that goes to show you wearing just a “Boo” sign doesn’t work as a Halloween costume. Better luck next year.

It’s not completely out of character for him.

Petey is only eight years old; there is no reason to expect him to have read the book! So he has no need to feel like a bonehead (anyway, he’s more a bigdome). And I like his earnest, minimalist costume; I think it’s very chic!

Oldest son went to his friends’ party last year wearing a black t-shirt with the. Word “costume” in white on it. He was told not to wear it this year, so his brother suggested a shirt with the words “a more elaborate costume” on it.

One year our son decided he was too old to trick-or-treat. At the last minute he changed his mind. With no time for real planning, he put on a button down shirt, a tie, nerd glasses, a pocket protector with a calculator, then made a sign: “Math Genius. Homework Help $1.” To his surprise, people loved it.

How about a suit and tie and a briefcase? A Jehovah’s Witness! I always wanted to do that one…

When I was around 10 I went as the Hunchback of Notre Dame. None of the kids voted for me as they didn’t know what or who that was. But the MC of the contest gave me an honorable mention.

I once went to a Halloween party wearing a monk’s robe and Groucho glasses. I was a Marx brother.Another year, I reused the robe and added a mask and a bag with a $ on it. That was a Felonious Monk.

I remember opening the door one time and finding a couple of Mormons standing there. They didn’t like it when I said “Oh, I’m busy right now but just leave a copy of Watch Tower.” Humorless dweebs! It was a hot day and as a good Christian I should have invited them in for a beer.

Boo Radley ought to be Petey’s role model.

But even at 8, Petey is smarter than most. I’m surprised he didn’t know Boo. (Unless his is a district that banned Mockingbird.) He should have grabbed Dill and done it up right.
