Frazz by Jef Mallett for October 27, 2012
Transcript:
Frazz: How was your color tour? Girl: You can't see anything from the back seat, so there was a lot of complaining. Frazz: I don't see you as a complainer. Girl: More of a negotiator, which is why we drove to the state park to go hiking. Frazz: so was the big whiner you mom or dad? Girl: I told him you don't go hiking in loafers, but did he listen?

Hated the slow-moving weekend tour buses of downstate whiners and kvetchers. (“Mabel! I TOLD you we should have done this last week! The man on the morning news said the leaves peaked three days ago!”) All this while the trees are still exploding in golds and reds with the occasional pink thrown in for good measure. Eh, at least they ate in the restaurants and bought antiques. Every year. It was just getting stuck behind six of them on an ess-y two-lane mountain road.

The eastern sierra is pretty open with great trails and more aspens than brush, shorts are in order on warm summer days.

For that matter, don’t go hiking in hiking boots until they are well broken in and you are wearing two pairs of athletic socks. Your feet will break down before your shoes are broken in.

As far as kids having a good view from the back seat, the recent automotive trend of higher “beltlines,” with the windows curving up toward the back of the car, means that it’s harder for back seat passengers, especially shorter ones, to have a good view out the window. It’s an automotive style trend that I hope will go away, along with the lack of bumpers.
