Okay, first – you generally have a lid and a screen on a rain barrel. Second – you never drink from the rain barrel (water off the roof — ick!); you use the water for your lawn or garden. (Other than that — this is pretty funny. :)
All you do when you boil water is take clean water away as steam, leaving the remaning water with a more concetrated amount of polutants. Now if you distill the water (catch the steam), THEN you have cleaner water.
I always get kick out of “experts” telling people to “boil your water” when some contaminate is discovered in it.
When my dad was a kid (late 1930’s, early 40’s), the cat disappeared and was gone all winter. They found him in the Springtime when they cleaned out the cistern (which is what the rain tank is called). They drank the water all winter. No one got sick.
@comicnut4636What you say is true if you are talking dirt, suspended particulates, etc. But the main reason you boil the water is to kill the bacteria (e-coli being the most common one found in water).

Give your immune system practice. By the word of the great George Carlin: I never get sick ’cause I swam in raw sewage.
