pcolli: Birds usually eat rice raw, particularly common and boat-tailed grackles (aka rice birds). Bread, on the other hand, is not particularly healthful for birds.
I know several churches no longer allow white rice to be thrown at weddings … if it gets wet, it gets sticky and clumpy in sidewalk cracks and floor boards and birds don’t seem to eat it … now if you throw bird seed, birds eat it … of course it draws in rats and mice, but that’s BESIDES the point! More visiting parishoners that way … ;-))
