Make Connie coming home and take care of Lawrence with the cast on his leg. If I were in Lawrence’s shoes, I would tell Connie as a mother quit chasing Phil and come home NOW!
Susan, think of strips like this as something of a reality TV show. 16 “awake” hours of activity edited down into one hour of interesting stuff. We don’t see everything that happens and an event won’t appear in the strip unless there’s something we need to know. A mundane “checking in” call from Connie wouldn’t make the cut unless it advanced the storyline. So Connie may have been calling every day to check in; we just don’t know.
Still, I agree, it’s pretty immature to leave your child with a friend while you hare off chasing a romantic fantasy. Using that pipe to reconnect with a guy is something I might have pulled in high school… oh wait, I think I might have, actually. :p
OMG! I’ve never seen anyone whine about people righfully calling Elly the spade that she is, when it hasn’t even happened yet! There’s not one comment above hers that bashes Elly, yet she’s off on a rant about Elly bashing, which proves to me that people who can sympathize with such a screaming lunatic have children I truly pity! There’s a reason some people take this comic strip so personally. I see them screaming through the stores all the time, just like Elly, but their kids don’t listen by the 4th panel. I call them my “birth control”!!!
Someone said last week that Connie did what jaeldid66 said. I don’t know what she did, because my paper started running this strip just a while before April was born, but being the cheap tramp that she is, I can’t believe she even answered the phone. Oh, that’s right! They didn’t have caller ID then, she might have thought it was a booty call.
It’s been days since she showed up at the wrong door. Where has she been since? Wandering the streets, drunk and crying?
“PHIL, PHIL, WHY WON’T YOU LOVE ME? I’LL PAY FOR THE HOTEL ROOM AGAIN. Here, let me give you some spending money. Let me buy you dinner………”

Oh, and what Susan said, except the last sentence. I have never had any tolerance for women like Connie. Once you have a child, that’s your first and only priority until they are on their own (except for your husband, which Connie chased off already). Connie is a failure of a woman. The only thing missing from this strip is that she’s a drunken coke fiend, but it seems to be implied by her behavior.
Again, for all the Monday morning quarterbacks, neither Elly nor Connie could ever hold a candle to what I saw while working in Children’s Protective Services. Maybe some of you need to witness real abuse or neglect to know the difference. These are just 2 human moms who do sometimes silly, sometimes dumb things. Again, as I recall the kids all turned out pretty good, so why must some of us sit in judgment?
