Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for November 03, 2012
Transcript:
Don't take it so hard, Nate. How can I not take it hard? They didn't even beat us fair and square! They won on an illegal goal! Yes, but that's not why we lost. Why do you think we lost? Because our offense stunk. ...Or, because we didn't play as a team. Yeah, whatever. But we agree that it wasn't my fault, right?

No, because Chad gave you a jinx! Remember?

Coach is showing a little wisdom here. Too bad Mrs. Godfrey can’t see it – maybe she’d learn something about fairness too.

Nate Wright has just learned the best lesson in sports: all referees are incompetent. Too bad he doesn’t have Sportscenter to replay the footage repeatedly until said ref retires in disgrace or gets a job in pro wrestling.

My football team had their game today. As a sucky goalie, I did my favourite thing. Skip around the goal post singing Barbie Girl. But as soon as I heard the sound of my father’s disappointed voice yell, “James! Focus! The ball’s coming!”, I stopped twirling around. I stopped singing Barbie Girl. And I actually saved the ball. I didn’t do any dives up or down to snag the ball. Let’s just say I have a strong gut.
Then because I saved the ball and my team won, I got to keep the ball. I played it with my dad at the forest area. Well, not a real forest, but an area with so many trees but not enough to make a proper one. The ball went far away. Dad and I went to find it. We couldn’t find it. We had lost our football, and our courage. It was getting darker. Darkness covering us like a cloak. Suddenly, a snake came. Hissing at us, it’s beady eyes twinkling in the darkness.
END OF MY SHORT STORY! THOUGHT IT WAS REAL? HAHA! WHAT DO YA THINK? BY JAMES. EDITTED/SPELL-CHECKED BY JAMES’ MUM

I have no responsibility for my team losing; but we win because of me.

Meanwhile, a most interesting storyline: We’ll never really know if a)Nate’s insistence that they were under a “jinx” didn’t decisively throw the offense all off, or b)coming in against a team with 60 straight losses didn’t decisively render the Bobcats “too easygoing” or c)the ref doesn’t privately KNOW that it was a handball (?!?!?!) Nate, at this moment,is looking for assurance that it really “wasn’t his fault”…….he’ll have to look into his own heart for the peace he’s seeking. A good week, Lincoln! Even if it wasn’t a Halloween treats story. Looks like Nate’s dad got a rest for a change!!

I’ll write another one tomorrow if you like. I love to write comics, stories and draw. In fact, I am doing this while I’m meant to do my homework and that homework-no kidding- is to illustrate a comic for the fable The Ant and The Grasshopper.

I agreed with Nate on this one. It was Chad’s fault they lost. Sorry Chad.

It was Chad’s fault! I thought that was a given.

Losing to a superior opponent, who beats you within the confines of the rules of the game? I have no problem. Losing to the officials, or because the opposition is cheating? Now we have problems. It was clearly a handball. The other team did not so much win as nates team was robbed of a chance of victory.

It was the referees fault
