In those days portraits were the only way of letting a prospective spouse know what you looked like…looks like someone bribed the painter. Didn’t help the skinny arms, though.
I dunno what he’s got there on the bottom R by his feet but it looks to my nearsighted eyes like his backpack has sprouted.
Enlarged image can be found here (along with a description), or at the only work by this artist, so far, to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog.Barthélémy Charles, Comte de Dreux-Nancré is privately owned.Stealing from the description: The painting was acquired by then Senator John F. Kennedy in 1958 as a present for his wife and hung in their Georgetown home, before being transferred to the White House after his election as 35th President of the United States. It was hung in the family quarters until the assassination of the President, but remained in the collection of his widow until her death in 1994. It was sold in 1996 (this has the price, search for Drolling).

@Linguist – “arma virumque cano” (Vergil, Aeneid) “I sing of arms and the man”. Are those arms human? Or on loan from a large spider?

So it was in the Kennedys’ Georgetown residence, then in the White House. A very well-hung portrait, I must say. Since nobody else has said it yet.
