I seem to remember reading somewhere that the term ‘warlock’ means ‘oath breaker’, but I can’t cite source for that. Anybody?

Actually..before Bewitched there was the movie staring Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart called “Bell, Book and Candle” and in that movie…Kim Novacs brother, played by a young Jack Lemmon explains that female witches are called "witches’ but male witches are called “warlocks”…. but, that is “hollywood history” not real history….needs to be explored a bit more!

If you’re talking about Wiccans, it’s “witch” regardless of the plumbing. “Warlock” has its origins in Old English wærloga which means “oath breaker”, or traitor.

Having Gotten some MUCH needed Sleep here is the reprint of my post from Yesterday: with thanks to Runar, Maykitten and Pathfindercec :Actually the Term “Warlock” comes from the Old English term for Oathbreaker. Waer = Faith + Loga (from Ltn: Leoga) = to Lie. prior to the middle 14th Century ALL practitioners [regardless of Gender] were referred to as / Witches /. There is a HUGE variance of Opinion as to the differences RE: Wicca, Druidism, Shamanism, Occult Practices (Black or White Magicke), Demonology and what have you.

Satch is too sweet natured to have broken Faith with Anyone and Bucky Katt is Possessed!
