REX MORGAN: So, all this partying is a cancer benefit – here’s where Rex’s doctoring skills will really come in handy.
MARY WORTH: I think the relationship between Jim and Dawn are becoming romantic little by little. There is a hint of the coincidence of Dawn’s close resemblance to Merry. Remember in a previous episode someone who claimed to be her father’s out-of-wedlock son? Could there be more to that story – either Merry may have been adopted or Jim could be a close relative of Dawn’’?.
BTW today I came across a stash of old comics I had in a box. One of them was a Mary Worth in which a heavy set lady in a 2-piece bikini comes into the home with a radio. Chester calls out, “Is that you Dawn?” [This Dawn looks nothing like svelt present-day Dawn] and Dawn answers, “Unless you’ve been giving out door keys to every woman you meet at the beach, Chester,” (Why would daughter-Dawn be calling her father “Chester”?).
APT3G: Repeat.
MARK TRAIL: When I was a kid I used to read Mark Trail, but the plots often involved “heh-heh” schemes of clever criminals. I re-started reading Mark Trail on internet but got turned off on a “heh heh” scheme of a guy who faked his death by drilling a hole in his boat so he could breathe. At that time I was trying to wean myself off of serial comics so I wouldn’t be so dependent in case i went on vacation. So, I guess I’m missing something on all the Mark Trail discussions.
In the 70s I used to read “Judge Parker” in the NY Daily News. When it was suspended for a few days, I called up the News to complain and was told that I could get the context of the plot when it would be resumed. I wanted to tell the News, that I liked “Judge Parker” for the witty remarks of the characyers and no getting the plot-context could replace the wittisms. Is “Judge Parker” still filled with witty remarks?
I refuse to give up “Rex Morgan” as it has fantastic plot twists and because of the way the artist draws even minor characters as personable individuals.
I don’t know why I continue to follow “Mary Worth,” I guess it’s because I live in a condo like she does and I’m fascinated by the way I used to read MW as a 12-year-old when she was an old lady and now I find she’s 13 years younger than myself! Does anyone know where her grandson is? He was about 10 years older than me when I was 12 and now I’m 73.
Good morning FoxTrotters: Due to the storm and a sick kitty (she has since recovered), I haven’t posted for a couple days. I posted briefly at Annie yesterday, and at B y E this morning and will be back to read the strips and post here later today. @ Arye: Interesting comments about the old comics! I’ll be thinking of you as “Sandy” and the Northeaster head in your direction.
Both Rex Morgan and Judge Parker have interesting stories and good artwork; I don’t know if I’d call the dialog “witticisms” but I enjoy the characters and the art.Rex – This story has taken some unexpected turns.JP – Bubba seems to be considering the offer and Avery is supremely confident, but there’s still a question of how Sam will handle this. Avery seems alarmed about the car.Mary Worth – Jim seems to not have noticed any strong resemblance. Even a small time near the water may lead to more time and eventually overcome his paranoid reaction.Phantom – We’re learning something about the significance of the bell.
Arye, thanks for sharing your comics memories. I am following a daily Judge Parker strip from the 60’s and its very serious. I’m enjoying it. The characters are almost always smoking cigarettes or a pipe. I also noticed this in the 1935 Hitchcock movie “The 39 Steps” that I watched last week.
PHANTOM SUNDAY: The Sunday “bell” story has promise…PHANTOM WEEKDAY: I’m waiting to see what’s next with the mysterious lioness…JUDGE PARKER: @marvee – Avery does seem alarmed…is it his SUV? (As I recall, Sam was driving)REX MORGAN: Thanks to June, I’ve recently added fresh clams to my diet. I purchase them live, in the closed shell, and bring them home & steam them until they open.ORDINARY BILL: Don’t mess with a cat!http://www.gocomics.com/ordinary-bill
JP – I think it was a rental car. Avery had flown in to meet with Sam and when they decided to go fishing, they didn’t want to take time to go to the ranch to pick up Sam’s vehicle. Maybe Avery is alarmed about Sam and Bea arriving because they may mess up the deal he’s working on.
