You can read them online for free as long as the sites you read them at offer up ads to pay for them and for their own expenses. Of course if you want to read them ad free you probably need to either become a member or become a paying member and get various bonuses for being a paying member that free membership doesn’t offer.

I’m pretty sure Dunlap is getting paid a fee by GoComics for using the strip. Think of it as his cut of the advertising revenue. If he’s not paying his “employees”, their beef (or pork, in Hamhock’s case) is with him.
