You can be smart and unemployed....you can be stupid and rich.

and ironically unemployed.
“Education” and “Intelligence” are not the same thing, and “Wealth” and “Success” are not the same thing.
There are many who are intelligent enough that, if their goal was to make a lot of money, they could have followed career paths likely to make that happen. But if their interests lie elsewhere (science, or philosophy, or education, or even – yes – the arts), they may be plying their intelligence in ways where “success” is harder to quantify than simple comparison of bank accounts.
It may even involve (horror of horrors) taking low-paying, low-status jobs to make ends meet so they can devote more time and energy to doing what fulfills their intellectual needs.
