Sometimes it’s a whole lot faster to wait in a regular line instead of a self-checkout even when there are only two or three people because of the situation in the comic.
I love when I make it to an empty self-checkout but the Wal-mart I go to most often doesn’t have self-checkout and usually only has a few registers open at a time.
It is because too many people are not putting the stuff thru the scanner and leaving it in the cart and ripping the store off. Not sure about the previous comment I can check out produce it has a number on it you have to key in. and I can use my credit card. but what amazes me is that there are people with one or two items that stand the regular lines are full but and self checkouts are empty
I refuse to use the self-check out. I was in a hardware store, saw that the only slots open were SCO, and returned my item to the shelf. The manager saw me leave and asked if there was a problem. “Yes. I couldn’t pay for it.” He pointed to the SCO, and I nodded. “That’s what I mean.” And drove away.
I love the self check. My only issue with it is that too many people without the intelligence to follow simple instructions try to use it and end up causing delays. Here’s a hint. If you have ever used one and had to call someone over to assist you, you can’t use them. Just go to a regular line and let those of who can get done and get out.
For some of you posters, it isn’t always the customer using the self checkout that’s at fault. In our one store, if you get one *that works right, you are lucky “Please scan your item and place it in the bag”, AFTER the item HAS BEEN SCANNED and PLACED IN THE BAG, AND ALREADY RUNG UP!
I like using the self checkout if I don’t have a lot to buy, but doesn’t work well if I’ve got a full cart. I can group my groceries in the way that works best for me, and put some in plastic (stuff that will have condensation on it) and others in paper (loaves of bread so they don’t get smashed) as I prefer. If someone else does it, I have to inspect it while I’m putting them in the car. Otherwise, stuff that needs to go in the cooler (it might be a few hours before I get home) or into the freezer/refrigerator right away might not get where it needs to be before it is spoiled.
@david_42 The problem is they usually only have one clerk for 4 SCO stations — so 3 clerks are out of work. @briatollah I agree with you — I won’t use them just for that reason — they are really ripping me off.

I wouldn’t mind self check-out so much if they’d give me a discount for using it. After all, I’m doing somebody’s job for them.

Only for bar coded items, no produce, and credit card purchase.

Then they’ll fine you for leaving the cart in the parking lot.

I refuse to use self check out because it puts a clerk out of work.
