Good morning, VistaBill and APOI. Yes, it’s kind of a strange place for an incognito meeting since everyone in the building probably knows now that Cinnamon Knight is on the roof.

Thanks for the TV Guide complaint phone number.I have two laptops (one being an Apple) and neitherone is showing the listings for the next week. So Idon’t think the problem not showing the future list-ings is on my end.

Mornin’ VB, APOI, ETC!Of course the Knight wants to meet him on the roof! Don’t all super-heroes meet on rooftops?I just wonder how a guy wearing a giant sardine can could get onto the roof?And I love Tracy’s look in the third panel! The arched eyebrow says it all!

Yesterday, several commenters said Eddie Anderson’s character of “Rochester” on the Jack Benny Show was a racist black stereotype.

Not true. Rochester was smart, literate, hard-working and very funny, the opposite of the standard 30’s racist stereotype of dumb, lazy, illiterate (like “Amos ’n Andy”), orfawningly obedient.

The very first sit-com, the Jack Benny Show’s premise was that Jack was a famous radio star who was the ultimate cheapskate, and Rochester was his only servant, a combination of valet, chauffeur, cook, etc.

Despite that, their relationship was more as equals; Rochester always swapped lines with Jack, ridiculing his boss’s cheapness, and he always got the better of his boss. (Benny wasn’t afraid to let other cast members get big laughs).

Rochester was one of the earliest (to my knowledge) of what is now standard, the back-talking servant, only the relationship between Rochester and Benny was friendly, and not as antagonistic as on shows like “The Jeffersons.”

(How cheap was Jack? The show’s most famous gag: A robber pulls a gun on Benny, and demands, “Your money or your life.” A long pause follows, and the robber repeats his threat. Benny’s exasperated response: “I’m thinking it over!”)

tracy looks CRAZY INTIMIDATING in teh first panel. could cinnamon knight be prepared to spill the beans to tracy and tell him that he and black p wanna help out? maybe tracy WILL send him to the academy.. or use him to force broadway’s hand. since mike said it would be an explosive christmas (paraphrasing of course) maybe the plan will go awry and black p will be broadway’s victim in the explosion of their apartment building? i agree with the poster yesterday who said this story got off to a slow start, but it has built up nicely

I think that when Tracy finishes with him, the Cinnamon Knight will be known as the Knight of the Woeful Countenance.

I would imagine that Cinnamon Knight’s access to the PDHQ roof was not orthodox. Maybe he zip-lined over from a taller neighboring building…. A meet with Tracy on police turf, however, signals that CK wants to cooperate. The question, then, is will Tracy go for this, or not? If “yes,” how will it work?

OTR is so much more enjoyable than TV. Better acting, better stories, and since the action takes place in the mind of the listener, much better pictures!

Several comments in reference to Pearl Harbor Day. December 7th is the 71st anniversary. On the 8th the US declared war on Japan. I’m 62 but my dad was in the Navy and I remember the significance the event had for his generation and ultimately mine.

So, your getting into super heroes. What experience does JOE have with super heroes? :0)

Yes, it’s true, Jack Benny and “Rochester” were truly more like family, than being just friends; another similar (less known) friendship (along the same lines) was that of Bing Crosby and his “idol” the Jazz great, Louis Armstrong.

They never come right out and say that Tracy is Chicago-based, but, it’s almost certain that he is

Yes, Chicago has been Tracy’s town all along. Gould was a little ambiguous about that, but the new team has been less so. Like on 11/26, where the “Union Station” in the strip is modeled after the real life Union Station in Chicago.

I’m observing Dec. 7 too. That was the day a divided country mobilized to war against evil forces that threatened to destroy freedom from the Earth. I don’t care if that’s not politically correct anymore, it’s true! Booyah to all you vets from another vet (Marines).

@blunebottle, Gweedo and othersI’m glad to see I’m not the only fan of the classic radio shows!I’d heard the story about Jack refusing lodgings if Rochester couldn’t stay there, too; Jack Benny was fiercely loyal to his friends.I hadn’t thought of it before, but Jack Benny deserves credit just for having a black actor on his show at a time when (I believe) most black characters weren’t just stereotypes, but were played by white actors.
