You are right, sort of… the islands are properly called Las Canarias by the Spanish and were long known, as you spell it, as the Canaries. Somewhere along the linguistic line, they became the Canary Islands. The question of the day is: Are there really any Canary birds, aside from the odd caged pet, in Las Canarias ?
