Actually, in the days before airplanes, the Japanese, among others, used to send scouts aloft on giant kites because they hadn’t invented the hot air balloon. I never heard how they got down safely, though.
Some years ago in Gary, Indiana (I don’t recall all the details) a man trying for a Guinness record launched a string of 112 kites. It lifted him 20 feet off the ground before he let go. The string of kites ended up miles away in Lake Michigan.
