@Darren BlairOne thing you missed in the retelling. The concept actually came because there was going to be a movie about this fictional folk star Chris Gaines and Garth Brooks was going to play him. They had already made the music when the movie deal fell through so they decided to release the album anyway. I think they were hoping the album would rekindle interest in the movie but, as you said, the fans were confused and didn’t buy it. It is actually a really good album. There are some great songs on there.

Was the deal done with Capitol Records – If so, he might be subject to Capitol Gaines Tax.

Can’t quite say that I get this one. Aside from the completely absurd notion of “respect of country music” (how is such a thing even remotely possible?), what’s the point of the pit behind the second door? How does releasing an album under a pseudonym and/or in another genre show disrespect for country music, and does that supposed disrespect warrant killing the guy? And if so, what’s the actual joke?

The whole Chris Gaines thing dates back to 1999. Is this cartoon an old reprint or did something new happen to the character?

Wow, I remember that, a very obscure and older reference.

Darren Blair: No, Brooks’ career went back to square one just as he was becoming famous. He did a number condemning domestic violence and that was too much for his hillbilly fans. He was banned from Clear Channel radio stations (not the overwhelming majority in those days they are now), and had to start all over.

Just as long as no one breaks into a renditionof Achy Breaky Heart I guess this will turn out okay.Man get some good country on there late 40s’s stuff. This crap today is so far removed from the true backwoods roots it is ridiculous. Garth Brooks was proof of that. Now it is as much redneck glam and glitter one can handle. It is like cowboys. Use to see them at Sul Ross. Dragging a trailer full of horses to a ranch. Get them out. Saddle them up. Choke a few steers with a rope and go man its the life of a cowboy.I go WHAT????I remember knowing cowboys that spent all day in the saddle. Broke a new horse in about two times a week. Rain. Snow. Wind. Dust storms. Branding. Herding. Sleeping and eating in the field. They would scoff at these so called cowboys and their big trucks wearing spurs as if they had a horse. It was an old saying. If you can’t make it in rock change the beat and go country. Billy Ray Cyrus was proof of that. Could not compete with Motley Crew so went all ROCK country. You see we have Country. Rock Country. Alternative Country. Throw Back Country. Australian Country. German Punk Alternative Techno Country.I will stick with my old Hippie crap. Silly songs. There is a new Christmas song out. Don’t know the artist but it goes Santa’s unhappy. Santa lost a Ho. He use to go Ho Ho Ho but now goes Ho Ho uhoh. Has a New Orleans sound to it. Heard it the other night on radio. They never said who did it but it sure was fresh and new.

Sometimes I find myself agreeing with this.

Mostly, though, I remember the following:

“…And I’ll admit I tend to sing a different songBut sometimes you just can’t be afraidTo wear a different hat……But if you’re gonna make a differenceIf you’re gonna leave your markYou can’t follow like a bunch of sheepYou got to listen to your heart…Nothin’ ventured, nothin’ gainedSometimes you’ve got to go against the grain” — “Against the Grain” by Garth Brooks

(And yes, I own the Chris Gaines album. Don’t listen to it much, tho)
