Radish, I think you’ve just committed a very original sin!The “thing” is a lily, symbolising purity. It’s a picture of the Annunciation, when the angel told Mary how the “shadow of the Lord” would cover her. God is breathing the Pneumos (sp?) on Mary. I think Mary is the one who should be sporting the purity symbol, but then we don’t know what the artist had in mind when he put it there. I suppose angels would be pure, at least the ones in Heaven.
