so will we be also mentioning the banning of “The Jewel of Medina.” why is it if it is a book that the right wants to ban it’s evil but if it’s a book the left wants to ban then it’s good and sensititive?
That’s called the freedom of a publishing house to decide what they want to publish. Random House wasn’t “pressured” – professors don’t have that kind of power. They sent the book out for evaluation and decided they didn’t want to publish after reading comments from historical experts. They aren’t obligated to publish every book someone sends them. Also, two smaller publishing houses decided to publish the book, so where’s the censorship?
I hadn’t seen that one on the most banned lists, so I hadn’t considered it. However, yes, if the far left wants to ban a book, it’s just as wrong as the far right wanting to do so.
I’m against ALL book banning by ALL people. Intellectual freedom requires that all viewpoints be aired, whether I agree with them or not. Period.
As for the publishing house deciding not to publish it, it’s their right. Is my black comedy about a school shooting being banned because no publisher has agreed to print it? No.
If “Jewel of Medina” HAD been published, or is published in the future, should it be banned? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

whoops! Random House canceled the printing under “pressure” from those that would be offended. my bad! so i guess technically it wasn’t banned.

Random House would never have done such a thing when Bennett Cerf was in charge. sigh
