At least, Elle, doesn’t look so ‘bedraggled’ today. She also seems to be in good spirits possibly still on her ‘high’ of getting a job. Wish the same would happen to my daughter.
If she’s making enough to cover the mortgage she must be putting in some long hours. I hope he’s covering his share of the housework but I highly doubt that.
Maybe John’s salary is fine to cover the mortgage, but if Elly’s salary is enough to cover it, then the family now has some extra money on hand, which is always a happy.
She’d better be making A LOT of money with this job because the mortgage won’t be the only thing she’ll need to pay for . . . Lizzie will be in daycare full time from now on (not to mention needing to find and pay someone to watch Michael when he gets home from school). This may end up being more trouble in the end than it’s actually worth!
In the earlier parts of the strip, Elly showed John was struggling. The idea that you go to dental or medical school and start making the big bucks right after you get the diploma is a myth. Customers are understandly wary of going to a fledling dentist who just got out of school, and it takes time to build a reputation. Not to menton as a dentist much of John’s income is eaten up by overhead (office space, dental equipment,, Jean).
Yes, remember that well. Bought our house in 81. And after ten years only about 2 grand went on the principle. Refinanced in 1990. Was able to pay off the mortgage in 15 years.
In the 80s, it was almost to get a fixed loan on a home. In Britain, everyone held they’re breath when the rates were announced, because even a .25% raise meant making a lot of changes.Low interest beats high interest, but a country can only manipulate this for so long. Sooner or later someone has to pay for these wars that just keep going on and on. It seems that there are more on the horizon.

That must be a small mortgage. Granted this was before McMansions, but still.

As a single mom, I found it difficult to find a job that would cover the cost of day care, let alone the mortgage or rent payment.

In the early 80’s Canadian mortgage rates were heading towards 20%. This strip dates from 1984.
