Dad: This is the Kennedy Center Honors? Information Person: Yes. Dad: I want to know why you don't recognize Latin-American artists and performers. Information Person: You know any?
Had to check on this and it gets complex:According to UPI News, on September 28, and on CNN, the Kennedy Center Honors has snubbed Hispanics and Latinos. Except for Plácido Domingo and Chita Rivera, no other person of Hispanic heritage has been honored, which has upset the Hispanic communities.
however:The selection process is kept secret, though "certain criteria seem apparent: a mix of artistic disciplines, the inclusion of men and women, minority recognition.
BTW…it is strange that most nonhispanic americans either don’t realize they are enjoying a Hispanic artist (i.e. Ritchie “Valens”) or only hear about them once they have had an untimely death.
i have a comment on the wealth of Latin performers however I am unable to word it in a way that both sides wouldn’t take offense to therefore I will forgo my comment.
How much of what is accused of racism is not of an issued of racial bias but of a cultural bias? After all, when most of us think of Raul Julia, we think of his excellent portrayal of Gomez Adams and overlook his fine work as a leading character in the “Taiming of the Shrew” as performed in ‘Shakespear in the Park.’ I only know of this work due to a short clip of his performance show in a tribute to his life on a News Magazine story on what I hazily remember being on CBS.
There has been a strong Hispanic contribution to the arts, but how much of it has been displayed to the majority of the citizens of the United States instead of culturally selected networks as Univision?
This is not meant as an insult but as a sincere request for information and knowledge.
If an orginization is pressured into honoring an artist from ANY specificy subset of humanity merely to appease that particualr group it is no longer an honor. They used to call that being a “token”. That is just as much racist as not honoring them at all because they are from that subset.

So the Kennedy Center has indeed acknowledged Hispanic performers, just not often enough to satisfy Sergio, is that it? Affirmative Action anyone?
