What does the ‘H’ stand for? Is Mrs. Santa Frau Holle?

they say virginia is for lovers. well, it is better than philly or boston. south carolina is ok for history if one thinks that slavery was ok. mississippi is us version of apartheid south africa with way too many religious gun-nuts. recommend for santa and wife to go to hawaii. sunny, 80 degrees, and, there is history with great food.

I’ve seen this joke before in one of Walt Kelly’s Pogo books, but it bears repeating.

And as far as the groaniness goes, remember that a pun is the lowest form of humor if someone else thinks of it first.

    - Paul, in Kansas, where the weather is cold and the politics are enough to make a grown Democrat cry.

Walt Kelly used this in the 60s or 70s. The bear, dressed as Santa, discovered that Georgia was shown in a map of the USSR. The bear, who was from Virginia, feared that the Soviets had stolen it as well. This led up to the same line; yes Santa, there is a Virginia.

I’ve always liked “Mary Christmas” (as seen in an old Peanuts strip), but sometimes see her named as Holly. Thus the H.

I believe her name is Holly, as in “Deck the halls with booze and Holly.”
