I’m a New Yorker. About 20 years ago, I was in Montreal, and noticed a number of small restaurants with signs that said “We serve American-style lunch.” Being hungry, I stopped in one to find out what an “American-style lunch” is to a Canadian. It was a slice of pepperoni pizza (which I think of as an Italian-style lunch) with a side of french fries (aka “chips”) and mayonnaise (which no American that I’ve ever met would even think of serving with french fries; ketchup maybe, but never mayonnaise).

Pizza and chips? I thought it was fish and chips, pizza doesn’t need chips. Yuck.
