Ralph: ? What are you doing? June: I'm measuring the dimensions of our bookcase. It's one-and-a-half hula hoops high by three-quarters of a coat hanger deep! Do you think you can help me remember that? Ralph: Trust me. That is something I will not soon forget!

When my called to tell me of a broken glass panel in our curio cabinet, I asked her to measure the opening so I could pick up a pane of glass on my way home from work. Her answer went like this: “OK. This way it’s 18…..and this way it’s……….7 and three little lines.”

It is no more crazy than the real international standard of counting wavelengths of standardized orange laser light in a vacuum. It is easier than measuring the current monarch’s foot, or dividing a string stretched from the North Pole to Paris into one million pieces.
