That extremely outdoorsy picture from Bloomington, Minnesota, has to be at least 35-40 years old. Bloomington doesn’t look anything like that now. After all, it IS the site of the Mall of America.
Thanks, Teresa for sending me to work thinking of TJ’s stage waltz & humming pussycat! Frog Blog is always good for attitude adjustment toward the positive pole!
Betty Jane Kramer is holding a very nice banjo ukulele, and she’s holding an “F” chord, which implies she actually knew how to play. So, I did a bit of digging.
I found this photo at http://old-time-religion.blogspot.com/2013/01/betty-jane-kramer-and-her-jesus-saves.html (which misidentifies her instrument as a banjo). It said that this was in Shamokin, PA and Linderman estimates it from 1938 – and assuming, she’s 13 here, that would put her birth around 1925.
This led to Forrest J. Kerstetter’s obituary, who was the widower of Betty Jane (nee Kramer) who preceded him in death on March 18, 1993. They had created the Kerstetter Family Ministry, which still exists.
http://kerstetters.com/aboutus.html mentions that Betty Jane was inducted into the Pennsylvania Southern Gospel Hall of Fame in 2001.

At which point, pussycat stands up, flips its tail and launches away into the room, leaving eight perfect puncture wounds in your thigh, just for fun.

DAGUERREOTYPEI wonder whether the photographer was being artistic or (and?) trying to get around the fact that a daguerreotype is a mirror image.

TURTLE CREAMAceite, not translated in the ad means oil. On the other hand, Turtle Wax isn’t made from turtles so we can hope.

What’s up, pussycat? Why wake the dead? Is not all of life a mask? What secrets do we hide?

There’s a recording of “The Negro National Anthem” here:

and the lyrics are here:
http://www4.semo.edu/abc/negro_national_anthem.htm
It was written as a poem in 1899, and set to music a year later. The official name is “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

That bearded fellow in Bloomington, Minnesota? He must be of German descent, because I found a picture of his grandfather and his mates:
