Is that the way spelling bees work? I assumed that the judges had one spelling that was ‘correct’, so if there was any uncertainty it was up to the student to ask. (Are the judges allowed to reply with a sentence that includes homonyms? ;) )
As we’ll find out in a few days, Charlie Brown was thinking of Willie Mays. It probably didn’t occur to him — or to Charles Schulz — that “Mays” could also be the plural of “May,” making it a valid word. (Spelling bees never use proper names.).I always had a soft spot for this particular storyline. When the movie “A Boy Named Charlie Brown,” based on this story, came out in 1969, I had just won a schoolwide spelling bee. (Winning word: feud.) Unfortunately, I lost the district bee (losing word: dawdle; I thought I had it right, but the proctor said I didn’t pronounce the second D) and didn’t go on the to the state competition.
Poor old Charlie Brown. You really have to feel sorry for him, especially the way he looks in the third panel. If you’re lucky, you’ll never go through life without any instance where you think everyone is laughing at you.
this is like ‘Carrie’ a decade later huh where everyone laughed at her and she burned down the school gym on prom night huh??…geez I didn’t know Violet was mean like Lucy was I thought she was decent her and Patty (not Peppermint Patty)…I know how this is going to end Charlie Brown yells at the teacher and he gets sent to the principal’s office..geez poor Charlie
Violet, someday you will be a bitter middle aged woman after your husband abandons you and the children to run off with his 22 year old secretary. And empties out all the bank accounts and mortgages the house out from under you before he goes. And Charlie Brown will be happily married to The Little Red Haired Girl.

If he really remembered it’s “I before E expect after C”, he wouldn’t be in that mess.

One consolation out of all of this: He becomes Champion Charlie Brown in the feature length movie. So who’s the fool now, Violet?

Yeah, Lucy is probably gonna call Charlie a blockhead, like normal.

True it appears there are 3 spellings for it, maize, maze and Mays. The plural of May (the month). And good old Willie Mays.

Yes, Violet and Lucy are just like Job’s so-called friends. “Great comforters you are.” But there will be other spelling bees.

Actually, he lost there, too. he biffed the word “beagle” by misspelling it “beagel” — and Snoopy was sitting right there in the front row!
