@Saucy1121: I believe they measured both distance and hang time. Helium filled neither went farther nor hung longer - I don’t remember the exact reason they came up with, but I believe it had something to do with the fact that the difference in effective weight was so negligible as to make no difference. They have a web site that you can check if you care. I prefer the CFL rule on punts - which gives the returner a 5 yard radius in which to catch the ball but forces him to actually run it back, rather than “fair catch” or let the kicking team “down” the ball. More exciting.

& MYTHbusters showed that helium inflated footballs do not punt farther than air filled ones. still, it’s a good gag.

If he threw it so high that they couldn’t retrieve the ball, the REFEREE needs to be tested for steroids!
