My cat used to do that. A few gentle tugs to the tail and he purred like an outboard motor. I figured, since he was a rescue cat that had been abused, he might be slightly BDSM, but maybe not then.@ Ashburn, a friend of mine often says, “Cats follow along in front.” They do, too, and they have radar; they know just how much to increase speed so you can’t pass them!
“Nudge” is a good word, where I define that as no distance between cat and foot when you apply the (gentle) force. If you swing your foot through air before it contacts him, that’s a kick, and you are going to hurt Kitty. It’s in a cat’s DNA to check out a space before entering it. Comes from being prey as well as predator.
Nudge might be a good word, but after reading the comments, I sat here adapting a Monty Python sketch to the topic . . .Is your cat a goer, eh? Know whatahmean, know whatahmean, nudge nudge, know whatahmean, say no more . . .
Mme. Bouqui has to be cajoled each morning to allow me to descend the stairs. She will eventually move, but only the the next step down. I swear she thinks it’s funny!
I do not kick my cats. They do, however, love to have their fur rubbed backwards vigorously. For some reason it puts them into that strange euphoric catnip state.
My cat loves to walk in front of me, so she’ll dart ahead if me, but then she’s not sure where I’m going so she stops. She often gets accidental “nudges” because there’s suddenly a motionless cat right where I was stepping. Either that or she’s trying to trip me and kill me.

Kitty football – they have moves like the best soccer stars, and trip me all the time.

Ah, yes, yours is the better answer. “Catatonic catnip state” sounds much better!
