Irving: You look nice today! Cathy: Thank you, Irving. Irving: You look nice too, Cathy, but I actually meant you. Dad: Me? Irving: Actually...um...I meant the other you...um...her! Cathy: Mom?? Why don't you just call her...oh. You don't know what to call her, do you? Irving: We've been married for six weeks! Of course I know what to call your mother! I just feel sort of silly saying it. I mean, I'm a grown man! It seems so young...so 1950s...so..you know....Fine. I'll try. You look nice today, Mrs. Cleaver!! Mom: Thank you, Eddie! Dad: No need to rush into "Dad", either. Take your time!!

Since my husband was 16 years OLDER than I, he was VERY uncomfortable to call my parents Mom and Dad, as they were closer to HIS age than to mine. He never called them anything until we had kids. Then it was “Grandma and Granddad”. That solved it.

My late mother-in-law never told me what she wanted me to call her. Once I called her “Mum”, as my OH did, but I got such a look that I never dared do it again.
After that I didn’t address her as anything except “You”.
My son-in-law calls me by my first name – and that’s fine by me.

I called my MIL “mom”, but it had a different tone than when I called MY mother “mom”. I never called my MIL “mom” in front of my own mother. I just couldn’t… My DH never called my mother by any name. He just avoided it somehow.

Although I can relate to the question of “the right name”, I’m still siding with Cathy’s expression in the last panel.
Nice to see you here in Cathy’s Corner, Gweedo! Hope you’ll return, too.

Hello Mrs Cleaver and Cathy friends!
I’m shy and awkward in everything I do so i never what to call anyone unless they tell me. I have two children from a previous relationship and their father’s mother was very clear in wanting me to call her “Mrs. Last Name,” even though we get along great. In my current relationship of almost 18 years she laughingly refers to herself as “Mom,” she laughs every time she says it and since I lost my own mom a long time ago I don’t really call her anything.
