Girls my age, always dreamed, back in the day, of how our name would look matched up with any serious guys we dated. There was no question of NOT taking his last name.
My wife wanted to keep her maiden, professional name 40 years ago. We went to Social Security looking for a fight. Woman at the counter said, “You don’t have to change it.”Game over!
just a few years ago, a woman at the ticket booth at a ski resort in Utah (forgot which one), hassled a friend because her last name didn’t match her husband’s (he was trying to use a spouse discount on her lift ticket). Oddly, she had hyphenated it, so his last name was on her ID… also, their addresses matched. They got the discount, but I was thinking “What century is this woman from?”
If Cathy doesn’t want to give up her maiden name for professional reasons, then I think she should keep it for that purpose. For all other situations, she can either hyphenate it and become Cathy Andrews-Hillman or, she can do things the old-fashioned way and just call herself Cathy Hillman instead.
Meanwhile, it just seems to me though, that this should have all been worked out in her own mind long before it got to this point because it took almost an entire year after Irving proposed before they finally got married. She could have been thinking about it while: taking a shower, eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast, tak-ing Electra for a walk, laying in bed at night before falling asleep. . . any number of times and places when she wasn’t actually planning the wedding itself. But then this is Cathy we’re talking about so the fact that she seems completely unprepared for this decision right now is absolutely NO surprise to me at all! ;-)
Hi, rgcviper! :-)
Hello and Happy Thursday, fellow Cathy fans. Hope everyone had a really nice day today! :-)
I agree GretchensMom but I would think that Cathy would use Irving’s name all the time since she wanted to get married for so long.
In my case, I may never marry but the guy I dated for almost 18 years (crazy I know) has a name that I can’t pronounce but only because I have a speech impairment and can’t pronounce the letter “r” especially in the middle. The only “r” in my name is at the front of my middle name. Ironically, all of my children have an “r.” Anyway, he insisted that I take his name with no hyphens if we ever got married.
I agree…pick a name and stick with it. I looked at all the paperwork involved in changing my name and that did it for me. A few relatives have seen fit to give me grief, but that was easily ignored.

One of the reasons I changed my last name was because my husband’s last name is easier to spell and pronounce!
