Cathy: Pizza?? You gave them pizza?? I bought $20 of low fat snacks for overweight dogs...and you're feeding them pizza??! Irving: They begged! Cathy: Honey, if you had a ball, they'd beg to play ball! If you had a leash, they'd beg to go for a run! They're begging for time and attention from you! I can't believe you'd give them food just to buy a little time for yourself! Irving: I never looked at it that way! Thank heavens you're here and can be counted on to do the right thing!

It’s the “eating pizza on the couch” that gets me! Do you KNOW how hard is to get out pizza sauce stains? And, cheese and peperoni grease?

Better be careful, Irving. I get the feeling that trick won’t work again on her.

Our dog has the sweetest, biggest, brownest eyes in the whole entire world . . . which is why we knew that if we didn’t start her out on day one when we brought her home as a 12-week-old puppy to NEVER beg for food off our plates, we were going to be in some pretty serious trouble where her weight and health were concerned. And because of that resolve to never feed her table scraps, she’s a very trim and healthy 9-lb., 14-year-old dog today. At dinnertime, she’s more likely to be off sleeping somewhere rather than sitting there, watching us, hoping that a little bit of something tasty will “accidentally” fall off our plates for her to eat because she knows that’s simply never going to happen. No one knows better than I do how difficult it is saying “NO” to those big, begging, “hungry” eyes looking at you with such hopeful intensity, but it can be done because for their sake, it needs to be done. Your will just has to be STRONGER than theirs! ;-)
