A friend of mine said that they spent more time looking for a parking spot than they did actual shopping yesterday. (I never shop on the day after Thanksgiving.)
I drove by the mall yesterday and our normally fairly empty mall parking lots were quite full. Unlike times in the past, you could find a parking spot but it was good to see. Normally it’s Bed Bath and Beyond, the exercise place, and the local bookstore with the only patrons.
Our “Black Friday” shopping yesterday consisted of going to Home Depot (twice!) and pick-ing up a fairly huge supply of various-sized lumber products we need in order to build two window seats for my “indoor she-shed” and shelving for our hallway kitchen pantry and basement storage room. I was amazed at how many people were there but unlike other stores that were so crowded with all the holiday shoppers, there wasn’t any problem at all finding a good parking place either time we were there.

Hi, rgcviper! :-)
.
Hello and Happy Saturday, fellow Cathy fans. Hope everyone’s having a really nice weekend so far! :-)
I went to the retail greenhouse on Black Friday and bought a sleigh load of Christmas indoor plants. Four Cyclamens and two Poinsettias. The greenhouse was a blaze of color, and many shoppers. Most were buying Christmas trees. I browsed the selection (all live, but cut, trees) I picked out one I loved….just for fun. It had a $70 price tag. I haven’t done a Christmas tree in years, but never needed to buy one. We grew our own.
I was sick of the expression ‘Black Friday" by the end of the first week of October. Way too many commercials on TV, newspaper, and even on-line for an ’event’ that does not even make sense to me.
Our local mall has been changing over to a strip mall for the past couple of years. Never could figure out why anyone would think that having to bundle up to face -30 temperatures and high winds in the winter just to go from one store to the next was a good idea. Of course, as soon as they announced that project many of the chain stores that exist only in malls closed. So now there is this large building sitting almost empty. You can still go from store to store (all 4 of them) without going outside since they still have not got that far with the conversion. Oh well, other than the bank and ‘The Source’ (the old Radio Shack) I don’t shop there anymore anyway.
Opening night for Mary Poppins went very well for the cast last night. Not so much for the stage crew and the lighting (oops – that is I). A few missed cues for both. The audience seemed to forgive us though since they gave a standing ovation. The cast is really good. So much talent in this small town and the surrounding area.
I NEVER shop Black Friday….didn’t do it when I was young, sure not going to start now. I too am nauseated by all the BF ads that started in September around here.

Malls around me are empty of stores. They lost customers and pulled out. I miss the mall experience of the 80’s!

Yup—parking can be an adventure, especially on big shopping days like Black Friday. Fortunately, I stayed home and experienced none of it …
