Cathy: A tactic used to psych shoppers into thinking they're thinner than they are. They put smaller sizes on bigger clothes to make you feel better about buying them. Irving: You mean when the tag says you're a size smaller, you could have GAINED weight?! Cathy: No! I mean YOU could have gained weight! When the tag says I'm a size smaller, I'm a size smaller!

I wish they wouldn’t do this. Not only does it imply that we are stupid, but also vain, and just confirms that we are fatter than we claim. Marilyn Monroe is a classic example of vanity sizing. She was 5’ 5.5" and between 115-118 lbs, so there’s no way she could have been the size 14 that people claim she was in 1960’s sizing. I found this article interesting if anyone cares to read it:

Vanity sizing. Yep. It’s a thing. I remember buying size 12 dresses when I was 13 years old and weighed 110. Now I am fifty years OLDER than that and weigh about 150 (on a good day) and wear an 8. That’s ok. Lie to me. I promise I’ll believe.

I weight the same as I did 10 years ago. And if I measure my waist it is the same as it was. 10 years ago, I always bought size 32" jeans. They fit perfectly.
Same manufacturer, if I buy jeans today, I get size 30. If I try on size 32, they are too big in the waist. I know I am not a 30 waist…in real measurement anyways.

If a size is specified in inches – such as a waist measurement – then it should be exactly that. No vanity sizing there. Now for small, medium, and large, since they are so nebulous anyway, what difference does it make! Just received some conference t-shirts. I ordered XL since that matched my chest measurement on the chart on their website (the t-shirt seller, not the conference site). They are way too big on me – and I measured my chest before ordering. Cannot even blame metric to imperial conversion since my measuring tape is in inches. Ah well, maybe they will shrink in the wash.

Am I the only one who hasn’t experienced this phenomenon…I wore an 11 as a teenager, I wear a 12 as an adult…not a huge difference. There are some stores that sell clothes in strange sizes, like 0, 1, 2, 3 for I guess like an 8, 10, 12, 14 or something like that, but otherwise I’ve pretty much worn the same size all my life.
