There are partial solutions, like use DuckDuckGo rather than Google, clear your computer cookies regularly, use private windows, change settings on all electronics so that they protect your privacy, and so on. Do the best you can and let the rest go. Unless you are a hermit that lives off the grid, has no ssn, grows your own food, doesn’t have a bank account, and buys nothing from anywhere, it is almost impossible not to be tracked.
Hello Cathy friends! Happy Wednesday! Have a great day, all!
They know what the skeletons in the closet are, they just don’t know who they belong to? Color me dubious. It is awful hard to collect metadata on someone and not learn who they are fairly quickly.
The leader of a security seminar I attended a while back stated the only reason most of us are save is because we are not that interesting – other than as targets for ads.The problem is a lot worse now than it was when this strip was written. Cell phones are now ubiquitous and they are easily tracked. Saw a report where a company, using publicly available data (for a price of course) tracked a number of phones in a few US cities. By watching where the phone ended up at night they could do a lookup on the address and find the owner of the phone. One ended up being a US Senator. With his permission they displayed a map showing his travels about NYC for a week. Another, they did not reveal the name or address, showed a pattern going from one address to another, back to the first address, to another address, etc. The other addresses were hotels and motels. I wonder what the profession was for the owner of the phone. Yup, scary stuff.
It is definitely winter now. We have enough snow now there are snowbanks and last night most of the bay froze over. Broke out the parka yesterday since it was -20C with windchill of -30C. Cold using any thermometer scale.
At least they don’t know specifically who you are, comic Cathy, in terms of name and other qualities. Still, the tracking is kinda creepy when I think about it.

Cathy, there’s a simple solution. Don’t shop on the internet! Buy local, in person.

I wonder if that is how the old Nielson Rating system worked?

Cathy, you can now upgrade to a device such as an ALEXA, who can listen in on your conversations…and other personal noises. ACCKK!

We’ve been carrying really sensitive microphones around with us since long before Alexa.
