great comic mind at work, illustrating so many ways that society molds our babies minds. art stupendous also. great strip, great ideas, beautifully rendered.
Went to an event at a local high school a few years back. I was sitting there watching it with the students on the other side. Something about them struck me that Ii just couldn’t place. Finally realized that almost all of them had some kind of denim on. -——————————————————If you’re going to be non-conformist, I guess it’s good to wear the same non-conformist stuff as everyone else.
I recall a strip where Calvin said he didn’t want to learn anything. Hobbes asked if it was a right to be ignorant, and Calvin said “I don’t know, and I refuse to find out!”
A kid like Calvin would typically founder in traditional schooling, but in some place alternative (such as the Sudbury model), he would thrive. In Sudbury kids have total freedom to do whatever they want-imagine that? Eventually they discover their passion and run with it.
After almost 33 years, I can still recite every dialogue I memorized in my high-school Spanish class and the first 18 lines of Chaucer’s Prologue to The Canterbury Tales, which I was required to memorize and recite for one of my Shakespeare classes in high school. As for State capitals? Yes, I still remember them!
…normally, i find legaleagle48’s comments overly harsh, but i feel the need to defend him today – there is nothing wrong with calvin learning discipline – no matter what he does later in life, discipline will be a requirement. everybody can feel as sorry as they want for calvin here, i feel badly for him myself, but it is the sort of badly that i’d feel for a kid who has to go to the dentist for a filling, or taking a pet to the vet for it’s shots – you can’t really explain to them why it’s necessary, and it’s obvious they’d rather be ANYWHERE else doing ANYTHING else – too bad…this is necessary, and it will happen. you have to learn SOME self discipline, you have to get SOME education. you can’t get anywhere without being able to read and write and do some math (just ask anybody who didn’t get taught how to do so)…and, you have to learn how to learn – that is one of the most important lessons…besides, calvin wouldn’t cherish his free time with hobbes if he didn’t have something to escape from…
Ray49FL. Love that one.And yes @legaleagle48, lighten up. It is only a comic. If you put all that passion into quashing ‘entitlement’ programs that encourage people to be on the dole, there just might be a smiggeon of hope for society and thereby make education worth acquiring.
Perhaps _____ could develop a comic strip about a well-adjusted child from an average family who applies himself to his studies in order to become a productive member of society. Now try to find an audience for that!!!
“When I think back to all the crap I learned in high school…..” (or something like that) — apologies to Paul Simon, couldn’t resist. One of my teachers told me “I’m afraid of you” because I was scoring off the charts on the “tests” and I was also a non-conformist. Creative kids don’t fare well in regimented schools, but they go on to do great things.
“When I think back on all the crap I learned in highschool,It’s a wonder I can think at all.But my lack of education hasn’t hurt me none.I can read the writing on the wall.

I think Calvin is gifted and his teachers don’t realize it because he acts out when he’s bored.

Just wait until Calvin gets his first job, if this is how he views school. He’s got no clue!
